Ball's and Beetles...

Here we are again with 3 weeks to go until we break up for our Christmas Holidays!

In RE we have been looking at the Christmas story. The children were able to write a storyboard to show us what happened in the story. They had to make sure the pictures matched up to what they had written.

Year 2 have also been looking at Christmas around the world. This week we looked at the traditions they have for Christmas in Spain. This included them eating seafood and having lovely colourful lights.

In Forest School we made scarab beetles with clay and looked for other bugs in the Forest. The scarab beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of the sun god Re.

In PE there was some excellent catching and throwing! We did some throwing at a target, and a mini obstacle course of different activities with balls. This lockdown is a great time to practice ball skills in the garden!

Red words will be found in some children's reading folders. All of the children have had some practice with their red words this week and the ones that they found tricky have been put into their reading folders for them to keep practicing at home. These will be changed every week; the words will help them with their vocabulary when writing and reading.

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend.

Mummies and Mayhem!

Welcome to the Year 2 Blog for another week!

Mummies and sparkling houses have been our thing this week... We made our mummies in Forest School using flour, water, sticks and newspaper. As you will see, the coats and trousers have been sent home for a reason as, the children thoroughly immersed themselves in the activity! They had a wonderful time and it's all part of the Copthill life.

Please make sure children's dirty coats and trousers are back in school for Monday.

In maths, we have been looking at money and the different value of coins. We were able to put them in order from the largest to the smallest amounts. It isn't very often us adults use change now as we use cards so much, but when you happen to use change, it would be brilliant if you could ask your child to recognize the different coins and maybe even help you get the correct amount ready.

Enjoy those winter walks and family time over the weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Walk like an Eygptian...

Pirates to Egyptians... what more do we want of these Year 2's?

What a lovely first week back looking at the Egyptians. The children have settled back into the school routine extremely well even if it is a lot colder and darker in the mornings!

There have been giggles and smiles as we posed for the camera on Thursday and made sure the bed hair was under control.

In English we have been looking at rhyming words and recognising them in the story we are reading.

In Math's, times tables, times tables, times tables is probably the best way to explain what we have been up to.

We have become experts at Geography by locating Egypt on the map and also looking at the River Nile. In Forest School we did some den building using natural materials.

Please could you encourage your child to learn to tie their own tie.  One of the Copthill Challenge Scheme challenges is to learn a new skill.  With the current restrictions that are in place nationally, it's even more of a challenge than usual so we are happy to class learning to tie a tie as a new skill and will sign this off as soon as your child can show us that they can do it.

Our Independent Explorer homework for this half term is based around our topic of Ancient Egypt.  Your child should choose a part of Ancient Egyptian history that interests them and produce a piece or work about it - this does not have to be a life size pyramid, it can be a picture, PowerPoint, poem, story, A4 fact file or anything that your child would like to do.

Have a great weekend!

Whacking and Wandering!

Well what a way to end our Pirate topic! We have been reading, acting and re-telling the story ' A New Home for a Pirate'. We have loved learning about Jed and Ted and will miss our pirate stories.

In Forest School we have been making pirate bandanas with juice from berries and other lovely things we have found wandering through the Copthill grounds.

We have put our science heads on and have been doing a float and sink experiment. The children had a number of items to predict whether they though they were going to float or sink and then tested them in some water to see whether our predictions were correct.

The children's stationery kits have been sent home with them for you to check whether there is anything missing. We are getting through pencils like you wouldn't believe with all this pirate story writing!

Some maths activities have been set on MyMaths to keep our maths brains in gear for when we come back. This is not compulsory but please do have a check as to whether it was working, so we can then sort any login or technical issues out when we come back.

We have had an amazing start to the term and we look forward to welcoming you all back after half term.

Stay safe and Enjoy!
